Thoughts for Meditation
At the Circle of Hope’s socially distanced women’s retreat last October, Gwen White spoke on Zoom about the phenomenon of social perfectionism. There is this tendency that many of us are noticing about ourselves in which our contentment with life and mental or emotional stability hinge upon feeling that we are appearing to be perfect by standards that are set outside of ourselves: they are set socially.

As a result of this, there is this idea among therapeutic or psychological circles wherein the complete separation from caring about how others might think about us is the highest achievable goal. As if the most awakened or cohesive person would just not care at all about how others might view them.
But then, Gwen suggested that what if, as people who are one with a triune God, who IS relationship in and of God’s self, we were actually designed TO care what others think of us. This was revelatory and helpful to consider. We are confronted here with a dualistic pattern from modern psychology: social perfectionism (being completely impacted by the opinion of other) versus total separation from caring about the view of another (as the highest goal). This third way that we can nestle into is instead a recognition that the opinion of the other should not live as Lord of our life, but that should in fact care about the opinion of the other.

Caring about the opinion of the other is a part of our humanity. To deny it is nearly impossible and an effort toward it’s denial would inevitably move us toward isolation. We need the opinion of others to help us know ourselves. To know ourselves: to allow our brains, our stories, our communities, our selves, our God to ultimately help us understand who we are, is the way that we might be able to understand God and others, and ultimately to love God, ourselves and others.

Suggestions for action
If you are able, walk outside of your home today (if this can be done safely)- or simply look out your window! Ask God to reveal why caring about the opinion of others might be important and holy. Ask God to reveal any places where you might be placing too much importance on the opinion of others or where you might place too little. Look at any people (or evidence of people) that you might see and consider how God’s triune self is also flowing through that person. Consider both the connection between you and that person and the separation that exists as well.
